About Waterloo-IVC Lab

Welcome to the Image & Vision Computing (IVC) Laboratory at Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo. Our lab, located at the E5 building on University of Waterloo campus, consists of a group of energetic researchers directed by Prof. Zhou Wang, a Fellow of IEEE, widely known for his contributions to perceptual image quality assessment and processing. We are interested in the understanding and modeling of image signals and the human visual systems as well as the interconnections between them. Furthermore, we exploit a wide variety of applications in the areas of human vision-based image and video quality assessment, processing, recognition, compression and communications to optimize the perceptual quality of the images and video streams consumed by human eyes. We attempt to bridge between psychological and physiological vision studies and image processing and computer vision applications. Our goal is to create perceptual quality-driven engineering solutions that could change how images and videos are being acquired, processed, coded, transmitted and visualized in the real-world.

Join us

We are constantly seeking for highly motivated students to join our research team as PhD and Master of Applied Science (MASc) students. All full-time PhD and MASc students admitted will be granted with financial support until graduation. PhD applicants are preferred but outstanding MASc applicants who wish to continue on to earn a PhD with us will also be considered. Successful applicants should be highly interested in developing and implementing image/video/multimedia processing, computer vision, machine learning and multimedia communication algorithms and systems. Desired qualifications include solid background in mathematics and statistics, knowledge and experience of working on image/video coding, processing and communication, computer vision, and machine learning problems, and good programming skills. Interested candidates should send one PDF file that contains all related information (CV, list of publications, etc) to Prof. Zhou Wang. Meanwhile, their official applications should be submitted through University application web site, for which more information can be found at https://uwaterloo.ca/electrical-computer-engineering/future-graduate-students.
